Neymar’s father has once again spoken out about his son’s sensational £199million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain to explain exactly why he left Barcelona.
The Brazilian stunned the globe when he left Lionel Messi and co. to join the Ligue 1 giants, shattering the world-record transfer fee in the process.
Rumours on why he felt the need to move on began to surface, with reports suggesting he wanted the extra money, and wanted to get out of Messi’s shadow.
But in an interview with Telefoot, Neymar’s father has claimed his son’s intentions were more admirable than the above suggestions.
“His friends Messi, [Luis] Suarez, [Ivan] Rakitic and [Gerard] Pique all tried to hold on to him. It was very difficult but Neymar really wanted to come.
He wanted this challenge and we supported him. But his decision to come to Paris did take me by surprise. We had an offer last year but we didn’t reach an agreement.
“This time Paris Saint-Germain’s offer was very interesting. The idea of winning the Champions League and the league pleased him.
“The truth is that it was me who hesitated until the last moment.
I said to Neymar that ‘you’re relaxed, you’re in your comfort zone at Barcelona so the best choice for you is to stay.’ But he wanted to get out [of his comfort zone] and put himself in danger, to take a risk.”
Neymar has made eight appearances for the French club since his huge summer move, and has scored eight times in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League.
This week he linked up with his Brazil teammates ahead of their World Cup qualifying match with Bolivia and Chile six days later.
He was photographed in training holding his foot in pain after apparently stubbing his toe, although it appears he merely sustained an impact injury.
